Chester Beatty Library: A Week of Tours & Fun
November 19, 2010 § Leave a comment
The Chester Beatty Library are starting their Members’ Week tomorrow, with two events a day for a week, most of which are free. Excitingly the week kicks off with “Sweet Delicacies from along the Silk Road” a talk by Rikke and Abraham (from the Silk Road Cafe) and lots of cakes to enjoy, with tea and coffee!
I had a chat with organizer Mary Dowling, who works at the Chester Beatty, the other day and her enthusiasm for the event is catching. Mary explained to me that Member’s Week is a thank you to those who’ve joined, but also a welcome to the public who may have heard of the iconic Library but havent had a chance to visit yet. The Chester Beatty Library, at the back of Dublin Castle is one of the most beautiful buildings around, and it has a warm Xmassy feel to it already, which is a wonderful way to get into the Festive season. Apparently, Mary revealed, that only 1% of the Chester Beatty collection is ever on display at one time-there are 60, 000 pieces in all.
Other highlights of the week are a Walking Tour of Dublin Castle’s surrounds with historian Pat Liddy at 2pm on Monday, November 22nd, taking in the Poddle, and the Viking Wall. A guided visit to Marsh’s Library Dublin is on at 11am, Wednesday 24th of November. You also might like the guided visit to Glasnevin Cemetry at 11am on Tues, November 23rd or a guided visit to the Garda Museum & the Garda Memorial Garden on Monday at 11am (Nov 22nd)
The last evening promises to be very special with a talk on Everest, “To Everest and Beyond” by Ian McKeever, with Lebanese food & wine, music, belly-dancing, and fun to follow on Friday, November 26th.
